Life of Tecumseh and of His Brother the Prophet With a Historical Sketch of the Shawanoe Indians Benjamin Drake Books
This book covers the life of Tecumseh from birth to death and includes early colonial period, the revolution, the French and Indian wars, and the settling of the Ohio country by whites. It's is a great and tragic telling of the interactions with the Indian nations. Tecumseh has long been one of the most admired legends of US history and this book does not do him justice. This was not as quick or fun of a read as it appeared to be edited from an oral telling...poorly edited. The book contains extraneous letter characters and improper English language that detracted from the story. In the end, there is considerable discussion, perhaps 10-15% of the book's total length about how Tecumseh died and who killed him. He seemed to know that it was his time and there are conflicting accounts of his demise. There are better books about Tecumseh.Product details

Life of Tecumseh and of His Brother the Prophet With a Historical Sketch of the Shawanoe Indians Benjamin Drake Books Reviews
Very good
Although written in 1800s vernacular it is an excellent biography of a worthy adversary. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The end.
This book was interesting. Gives you a view of the social structure of Indian tribes. It was interesting to learn about the prophet brother.
Wanted to know more about him.I knew Andrew Jackson and good native Americans went to the Ohio valley to kill him and his band
I've read many historical books on Native Americans and this one has to be one of the least impressive. If you want to read a good book on Tecumseh, read the one written by Glenn Tucker.
I have read another book on Tecumseh that was a bit slanted towards him. This book may have been more objectively written to expose his true nature. It certainly was written closer to his lifetime and I feel it is probably more factual. He certainly is a very interesting character. Through out the book, it was mentioned several times that he was opposed to torture of American captives.
This book was written by the great author and historian, Allan W. Eckert. I first read his Ohio River Valley chronicles titled "That Dark and Bloody River" which covers the impact on the Native American Indian tribes by the white settlers moving through the Ohio Valley area. "Life of Tecumseh" is the reasonable next step in reading Eckert's novels. It covers the life of Tecumseh from birth to death contrasted to American history including the early colonial period, the revolution, the French and Indian wars, and, most importantly, the settling of the area by whites ever moving to the west. It's is a great and tragic telling of the interactions with the Indian nation. I recommend it highly.
